Episode 5: Cables, colourwork, amigurumi and classic granny squares

So in the comeback to podcasting nobody was waiting for I have rebooted my YouTube channel. Life has finally settled down somewhat and I felt ready to get back on the podcasting thing. In this episode I get chatty about my latest knitting projects and my foray into Amigurumi and crocheting (which I think is having a surge of popularity these days). Show notes below.

Mentioned in this episode

What I’m wearing

Abram’s Bridge by Mer Stevens, first published in Pom Pom Quarterly Magazine issue 14, autumn 2015. Pretty sure you can now buy it as a standalone pattern if you don’t have that issue. My bright mustard yellow version is very warm and knit up with Rauma Finull PT2 and Sandnes Garn Silk Mohair held double.

Bound off

I recently finished a little baby cardigan for my 4 month old baby, accidentally colour blocked because I ran out of the main colour. The pattern is Anker's Cardigan by Petite Knit and it is made out of Rauma Lamull held double to create a DK weight yarn.

There was also a guest appearance from Theo the T-Rex, a crochet toy made for my 4 year old son. Theo is made in Rainbow Cotton 8/4 by Hobbii on a 2,5 mm crochet hook. The pattern is by Sarah Abbondio and can be found in the book “Dinosaurs, mammoths and more prehistoric amigurumi”. This is the first, but not last, time I’ve tried my hand at the crochet creature making known as amigurumi. Totally hooked on it and I want to make all the cute cuddly toys! I blame Ali from the Little Drops of Wonderful Podcast and her parade of wonderful creatures in the amigurumi episode. 😍

On the needles

First and largest WIP is Lillemors Herregenser from the Sandnes Garn pamphlet Tema 63, part of their series on iconic Norwegian patterns. These are classic designs from their archives that has been updated for modern knitters and Yarns. Lillemors Herregenser is an all over colourwork mens pullover done in Sandnes Garn Smart, a DK superwash wool yarn.

More amigurumi creatures are on the horizon and I’m keeping the mojo going with Albert the Longisquama from the same pattern book as Theo the T-rex. This one is hooked up with Scheepjes Catona, a mercerized cotton yarn. This sport weight cotton comes with 125 m per 50 g ball and is shinier and (should be) more hard wearing than the one used on Theo.

I also muse on the importance of going with the flow and using the energy new yarn and patterns give to immediately cast on and get things done. I have much yarn lingering because the initial excitement about a project wore off before I even got around to start it. Inspired by The Crimson Stitchery and her stash-less 2020 i finally began a project that has been in the back of my head for a while - the granny square pullover - a basic but colourful sweater made out of scrappy granny squares and joined to make the sweater body - sleeves, neckline and hem will be knitted in a neutral palette. Not following any pattern on this one so just winging it really. As we do with most things in life.

Thank you for watching and/or reading! Hope you will be back for the next one. 😃
